Perry Palmer: My WWII Service in the U.S. Navy

Halfway through my Navy assignment to Midway Island in 1943, I saw something I’ll never forget. I was a reel operator in a target tow Grumman J2F biplane. One day, when I was not scheduled to fly, a pilot named Binsfield gave a radio repair man a ride in one of the Grumman J2F biplanes. As the three men flew around the island, we suddenly heard this loud noise and saw smoke in the sky. The J2F plane had collided with a Marine F4U Corsair that was landing on the north end of the island. It was a terrible shock as we watched the black smoke spiraling into the air.
